List Building Using Traffic Exchanges (Part 5, List Building Strategies)
BY: Sean Mize Words: 318
Traffic Exchanges are an old, beaten up, form of prospecting, that, when used correctly, can be huge in building a quality list, at least at the beginning. So what is a traffic exchange? A traffic exchange is basically an agreement with a large set of web site owners that they will ‘exchange’ the exit traffic on their site with each other. So for example, when a visitor leaves your site, they will have a pop-under for another site in the exchange. And your site will be shown on someone else’s in the exchange. The traffic you get and the more you show someone else’s site, the more yours will appear in the rotation on others’ sites. One of the big keys with traffic exchanges is to quickly capture an email address and name. Often when someone is closing a window, they are shutting down for the day, or they did not find what they needed, so they are closing to go to something else. So you must quickly grab their attention. The page you use for the traffic exchange should be specifically designed to induce the viewer to quickly leave their information so you can email them later. A quick script, suggesting something like, ‘Don’t forget to claim your free ebook’ can be much more effective than a 500 word essay! One thing to remember is that with traffic exchanges, your opt-in rate is very low, so if you are not doing adequate tracking, it really makes your site look like it does not convert well. Just remember, traffic exchange traffic does not convert well, period. Another good thing about traffic exchanges is, especially if you are just getting started, it can give you much needed traffic for search engine ranking purposes and your Alexa ranking. Just remember, this is not part of your long-term strategy, but rather a boost to your traffic right at first.
