List Building and Maintenance
BY: Tellman Knudson Words: 356
When you start list building, you are doing it one of two ways. Either you've hired an autoresponder service and are paying them each month to house your list and to make mailings for you, or you have your own mail service program. All things being equal, I'd still opt for paying a service each month. Why is that? There are a couple of reasons, actually. First, when you have an autoresponder, they take all the worry about legal compliance out of the equation and you can concentrate on better methods of list building instead of whether you're operating inside the law. Second, online autoresponders usually have a better deliverability rate. That's very important. If you've spent a great deal of time on list building activities, you want to be sure that your messages are getting through to the people on your list. Third, there's maintenance. When someone opts out of your list, an online service will take care of removing the person from your list. If you have your own list building and maintenance program, you have to do all of that yourself. And if you forget, and keep sending mail when someone has asked not to receive it any longer, you could be liable. Fourth, some autoresponders have more and better features, such as click tracking, RSS forwarding, and well, an affiliate program. That's great! If you go out and get some people into the program who really like it, they'll tell their friends and promote it, too. You'll probably be paid a percentage of what they pay for autoresponder services each month. If you get enough people doing this, guess what? Your paid autoresponder becomes free. None of this may seem important to you when you're just getting into list building and counting costs, but when you have 10,000 people on your list, these things will be huge! When all is said and done, even though you pay for an email handling program once and you're done paying, it may be cheaper, but it's probably not better. Consider this carefully when deciding on which way to go. Remember, your list is your best asset. Tellman Knudson is CEO of OvercomeEverything, Inc. and a master of list building.
